The Carwise Performing Arts Department has grown from its inception in 1993 to a full time elective school program with rigorous standards. The department offers classes in band, orchestra, jazz band, chorus, and theater to the 350 plus students enrolled in the program.
The band program and orchestra program have received numerous Excellent and Superior awards from the Florida Bandmasters Association and the Florida Orchestra Association. The chorus has consistently received Superior ratings from the Florida Voice Association since the school opened in 1993. For the past two years at Universal’s Music USA Competitions, our band and orchestra have received 1st and 2nd place awards and the chorus won 1st place in the middle school division as well as the Grand Championship award.
Jason Obara is the Band and Orchestra Director at Joseph L. Carwise Middle School. He has been teaching for Pinellas County Schools since 2001.His responsibilities include directing the Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Orchestra, Symphonic Band, Beginning Band, Beginning Orchestra, Jazz Ensemble, and co-directing the Music Theater class.
Mr. Obara received his Bachelor of Music in Music Education from the University of Florida. He is a member of the National Association for Music Education, the Florida Bandmasters Association, the Florida Orchestra Association, and the Pinellas County Music Educators Association. He currently serves as President of the Pinellas County Music Educators Association. He is also the Related Arts Department Head at Carwise Middle. In 2016, Mr. Obara was selected as Pinellas County Music Association Secondary Music Educator of the Year.
Mr. Obara currently resides in Seminole and is happily married to his wife Sara and is the proud father of two Maltese-Shih Tzus, Sparkles and Sprinkles.
Kelly Moss is the Choral Director of Carwise Middle School. She leads 4 sections of chorus: Concert Choir, The Carwise Ladies, Beginning Girls Chorus, and Beginning Boys Chorus. She also co-teaches Music Theater with Mr. Obara, the band and orchestra teacher at Carwise.
Mrs. Moss is from North Carolina, and attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, where she studied vocal performance with a focus in Operatic performance. She has participated in stage productions such as “Oklahoma,” where she had the lead role of Laurie, as well as “Pirates of Penzance” and “Phantom of the Opera.” Mrs. Moss also completed a summer residency at Bel Canto Northwest Vocal Institute in Portland, Oregon, where she was cast as Adriana in “The Boys from Syracuse.”
Mrs. Moss is in her 9th year of teaching and has taught at both elementary and middle school levels. She has written and choreographed four musicals for her students to perform over her teaching career. She has led her students to participate in All-County, All-State, and Honor Chorus performances in North Carolina, and she continues to prepare Carwise students for similar venues in Florida.
